BERLIN ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCY (BERLIN AiR) 

 

BERLIN AiR offers selected filmmakers the opportunity to gain international experience and forge industry contacts. They bring together artists and film professionals from Berlin-Brandenburg and partner countries.

The stay in Berlin is organised and guided by the NIPKOW PROGRAMM, which also oversees the curriculum of each of the selected residents of the ten Medienboard funded programmes. The residencies work on a reciprocal basis with Greece, Hong Kong, Israel, Mallorca (new!), Mexico, Paris and Rome and are one-directional, to Berlin only, with Lebanon, Mumbai, Palestine, Sub-Saharan Africa and Turkey. The residency covers the travel costs (one economy return trip), accommodation, a monthly allowance and professional support while in Berlin or in the partner country.

From Berlin - to Guanajuato (Mexico)

The residency Berlin - Guanajuato enables a filmmaker from Berlin-Brandenburg to live and work for two months in Guanajuato (Mexico). In return, a filmmaker from Guanajuato comes to Berlin for three months. In this way, both receive a unique opportunity to develop their skills and become familiar with the other country’s film industry. The filmmakers from Berlin-Brandenburg will have the unique opportunity to get to know Guanajuato and thus Mexico in all its many facets, and will gain insight into the country’s media and film scene. The programme is oriented toward the needs of the fellowship recipients. Representatives of Guanajuato’s film and media industry and cultural institutions are available to serve as mentors. The stay is organised by the Guanajuato International Film Festival and is supported by the Goethe Institut Mexico. The fellowship covers travel costs and accommodation and additionally provides a monthly cash allowance.

From Berlin - to Hong Kong (China)

The residency Berlin - Hong Kong enables a filmmaker from Berlin-Brandenburg to live and work for three months in Hong Kong. In return, a filmmaker from Hong Kong comes to Berlin for three months. In this way, both receive a unique opportunity to develop their skills and become familiar with the other country’s film industry. The filmmakers from Berlin-Brandenburg will have the opportunity to get to know Hong Kong in all its many facets and to gain insight into the country’s media and film scene. The programme is oriented toward the needs of the fellowship recipients. Representatives of Hong Kong’s film and media industry and cultural institutions are available to serve as mentors. The stay is organised by the Goethe Institut Hong Kong and is supported by the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

The fellowship covers travel costs and accommodation and provides a monthly cash allowance.

From Berlin - to Mallorca

The BERLIN AiR “Berlin-Mallorca - two months”  enables a German film professional to live in Mallorca for two months to develop a new project and skills and learn about the film industry in Spain. The stay must be completed within 2023.

Selected candidates will have the opportunity to gain insight into the Spanish production landscape and meet producers and professionals, in accordance with their profile.

The residency in Mallorca is for 2 months

- The artist-in-residence chooses to participate in one of three "Islands of Fiction“ phases, either:

  1. Writing Retreat in April/May, 10 days in a country house (Agroturismo); or
  2. Film Lab in the summer, 1 week at the end of June or beginning of September; or
  3. An Industry Event (with networking and pitching), 1 week at the end of October, during the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival.

This application is opening its first call in 2022. The Artist-in-Residence receives:
- accommodation and a return economy flight
- A monthly allowance € 1.000.-

From Berlin - to Mumbai (India)

The residency Berlin - Mumbai enables a filmmaker from Berlin-Brandenburg to live and work for three months in Mumbai. In return, a filmmaker from Mumbai comes to Berlin for three months. In this way, both receive a unique opportunity to develop their skills and become familiar with the other country’s film industry. The filmmakers from Berlin-Brandenburg will have the opportunity to get to know Mumbai in all its many facets and to gain insight into the country’s media and film scene. The programme is oriented toward the needs of the fellowship recipients. Representatives of Mumbai's film and media industry and cultural institutions are available to serve as mentors. The stay is organised by the Goethe Institut Mumbai.

The fellowship covers travel costs and accommodation and provides a monthly cash allowance.

From Berlin – to Paris (France)

The residency Berlin - Paris offers a filmmaker from Berlin a three-month fellowship in Paris. The aim is to help the resident to gain insight into the local film industry, to make contacts and exchange experiences. The fellowship includes travel expenses, an allowance of €1,296 per month, as well as accommodation in the Cité des Arts, which the participant will rent for a monthly rate of €451. In addition, fellows will receive professional support as needed and networking possibilities within the local film industry.

This is an initiative of the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, the Institut Français Deutschland and the City of Paris.

From Berlin – to Rome (Italy)

The Medienboard and the Rome-Lazio Film Commission have established an Artist-in-Residency partnership. It offers a filmmaker from Berlin a three-month residency in Rome. The aim is to help the resident to gain insight into the local film industry, to make new contacts and exchange experiences. The fellowship includes travel expenses and accommodation, as well as a cash allowance of € 1,200 per month.

From Berlin - to Tel Aviv (Israel)

The residency with Tel Aviv started in 2009. In cooperation with the Israel Film Fund, the Medienboard offers a German filmmaker a three-month fellowship in Tel Aviv. Here too, the object is to gain insight into the local film industry, to make contacts and exchange experiences. The fellowship includes travel expenses and accommodation, as well as a cash allowance of € 1,000 per month. In addition, fellows will receive professional support in networking within the local film industry.

From Berlin - to Thessaloniki (Greece)

In cooperation with the Thessaloniki Film Festival and the Thessaloniki Goethe Institut, the Medienboard offers a German filmmaker a three-month fellowship in Thessaloniki / Greece. Here too, the object is to gain insight into the local film industry, to make contacts and exchange experiences. The fellowship includes travel expenses and accommodation, as well as a monthly cash allowance. In addition, fellows will receive professional support in networking within the local film industry.
